“Happiness does not depend upon what you have or who you are. It solely relies on what you think.” Buddha
Each day of our life is important and precious. The question is how to enjoy and be happy?
We see that life is full of good and bad. There are points of enjoyment, then there are points of depression.
The important thing is how we take upon life so that we enjoy it. It depends upon conditioning your thought process. It is your thought process that determines that how much you can enjoy your life and not the happenings. With a mature and disciplined mind you can take the things to your stride.
Remember, you are the master of your life and no one else. It is only you and your thought process that determines how you feel and react to something.
It is a very simple observation that under the same circumstances different people will have different reactions. Some reactions will be totally opposite to each other. The happening is the same but the reactions are different. Why? Just because of the thought process.
An Interesting story on Thought Process (Perception)
Let me share with you a short story about different perspective of different people for same thing-
A wealthy man took his son on a trip to the country with the purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.
On their return trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?” “It was great, dad,” the son replied. “Did you see how poor people live?” The father asked. “Oh yeah,” said the son. “So, tell me, what you learned from the trip?” asked the father.
The son answered: “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.”
The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “Thanks dad for showing me how poor we are.”
Isn’t perception a wonderful thing? The perception is the reflection of your thought process. If all of us see everything the same way, there is hardly anything to learn. Next time someone disagrees with you remember that it is an opportunity to learn a new perception.
How to Make Best of Your Thought Process?
Everyone has a different thought process and that is why the reaction to same occurrence is different. The point is, how we can make our thought process positive in different conditions.
Normally, people will react to a good incident positively. However, in case of a so-called bad incident, they’d react negatively.
For instance, if someone comes and praises you, you will feel happy but if someone comes and talks against you, you will react and be upset about it, If this is what happens with you, then you need to think about who controls you. Is it you or others? Is it you or the circumstances?
You cannot change others. You cannot change the circumstances. They are not in your control. But you can change yourself by changing your thought process and be in control of yourself.
Isn’t it simple? If you can control yourself, you have to control only one person. Others are many in number. Circumstances are too many in number. Why control so many things when you can control only one thing and enjoy life.
One who can control his thoughts is happy, successful and prosperous. He commands others. He commands the circumstances. He is powerful. He is respected. He is the leader whom others follow.
Would you not like to have everything in life just by controlling yourself? There are no external forces, it is only you and your internal forces that you need to take care of. It is indeed simple if you think so.
What can be simpler than controlling only and only one thing your whole concentration is on only one thing, i.e. your own thought process. You need not think of anything else. So simple. Just control your thoughts and achieve every happiness in your life.
Whenever something kicks your negative thought, think of some incident when you reacted in a negative manner and someone else took it positively. In everyone’s life, there would be hundreds of such incidences. Have an open mind while referring to such incidents.
Now try to analyse, what made the other person take the thing positively to which you reacted negatively. Try to look at it as a third person and don’t allow your own ego or bias to interfere. That is the trick.
If as an honest and impartial judge, you can understand and appreciate the positive reaction of the other person, then you can realize that such incidents and circumstances can’t pull you down in future if you adopt this positive attitude to the said incident.
This is one of the methods which works very powerfully to convince yourself about the positive attitude of others against your negative attitude. While taking the judgment, do not think of anything else but particular incident.
Never look at this positive character in his totality, because that will make you biased. Do not look at yourself in totality, because again, that will make you biased. Only your unbiased judgement can convince you to pick up this particular positive attitude.
As a judge, you have nothing personal with the parties involved and you take the judgement only on the basis of the merit in the case.
While doing this exercise, do not indulge in analyzing the character of the person. Again, focus on that particular incident. You are doing this exercise for your improvement. It is something like self-cleaning. So, concentrate on your cleaning process rather than anything else. Once you are able to take control of yourself, everything else will fall in line. Take up one thing at a time. You may identify your various weaknesses but don’t try to handle all of them at a time. Take one and practice it till it is a part of you. It should become automatic so that you don’t have to think of it or put in any effort.
How Easy is it to Change Thought Process?
The fact is, erasing your old pattern may not be very simple. You need practice. Only by continuous practice, you can change.
Initially, you may have to put in more effort. But once you change and feel the benefit, the other changes will be easier. It is very important that you feel from the depth of your heart that the positive change is doing good to you. Get thrilled by it! Pat your back for your achievement.
It is not a small achievement. You deserve the appreciation and it is you who has to recognize and appreciate. This emotion of yours will go to your subconscious mind and this will become your second nature.
Try it. It is not at all difficult. All factors are within your control. There are no external forces that can stop you. You are powerful and can act for your own good. Is it not thrilling to think that you are ate master of yourself? So go ahead. Be your own master. Change your fate for yourself.
Be careful in choosing your thoughts. Only allow what gives you peace and let go what brings you suffering. Happiness is just a thought away.
